The Sumter School District is the most accessible form of formal education in Sumter County and it should always be the gold standard for education in Sumter County. As a product of Sumter Schools and a parent of two Sumter Schools graduates, I want to work to make sure that we are working to prepare young people for all of the opportunities of tomorrow
Sumter has significant responsibility for maintaining and improving aging facilities while demonstrating that taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly. The district identified facility improvements as a major budget priority, and a 2026 state investigation raised concerns about permitting, construction oversight, expenditures and safety involving district projects
The central challenge is ensuring students are performing at grade level and making measurable progress, especially in reading and mathematics, while closing achievement gaps. South Carolina requires district strategic plans to prioritize student achievement and reduction of identified gaps.
Sumter’s 2025 four-year graduation rate was 79.8%, compared with 86.7% statewide. It also fell from 82.9% in 2024. That makes improving graduation while expanding college, career, technical, and military readiness an important districtwide issue
